The Tempest

I do not think it is fair to classify a Shakespearean play in only one category.  I do feel there is a "serious" tone to it because of the plot line and what is actually happening in the story; however, there are very many lighthearted jokes made throughout the play.  There is the magic and fantasy element in this story which does put the play into a darker realm of entertainment, but I just feel that because of these times where the characters make these jokes, the play cannot be classified only as being "serious" and dark as the poster below displays.

  1. Why, exactly, do you feel that magic puts this play into a "darker realm"?

  2. I know what you mean, often witchcraft and sorcery has a dark connotation and perhaps that was Shakespeare's intention in the first place. I agree that the poster does represent the poem very well, especially with dark undertones.

  3. I see how the jokes may make it seam like a lighthearted play. But what about what Shakespeare is saying, how some people are not forgivable, and that not everyone can be taught. Those can be seen as dark.

  4. You are right! This play had many non-serious moments. Many jokes were mentioned and there was a marriage in the end. So seriousness wasn't very involved in the play. What else could you find that made the play non-serious?

  5. I agree with you Mike. "The Tempest" could not be categorized as one category. However, I think it could be categorized as all three categories, lighthearted, drama, and escapist.
