Daily Show "Leave it there"

Dear Blog,
It was very interesting yesterday in class when we got to watch a clip from the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  The segment he was doing was lampooning CNN's reporting ability.  With a comedic spin, Jon Stewart points out the problems with CNN and their fact checking abilities.  He shows clips of what CNN shows and then he interprets them, exposing their flaws.  I actually learned quite a lot about the follies of news reporting and with the exposure, I was able to learn more about critically analyzing news reporting.  I learned that news stations are focused on much more on marketing and ratings rather than the actual story.  I thought it was horrible that CNN cuts off important debates and vital information from crucial topics to show a youtube video of a kid doing something silly.  They are a news station.  Find things that actually matter.  Leave the entertainment to access hollywood and Entertainment Tonight.  CNN promises serious news and it should deliver what it promises, and not just tease its audience with information that has not even been fact checked enough.  News stations need to step up on the caliber of their reporting, or they will become obsolete in the race with online news.

  1. I completely agree, it doesn't make sense why they would make time for those silly youtube videos, when there are clearly more important issues to go through.

  2. Yes, I do agree that their tactics are disappointing. Hollywood was made for a reason, and that was to focus on the unnecessary drama that happens everyday. The news is basically just for news related subjects that are important and vital for the public to know, but due to this era being under the control of the media, it does seem to be dwindling in delivering important and reliable data/news. What critical problems did you notice?

  3. High ratings seem to be more important these days because it leades to making more money. Still i dont see how CNN can have enough viewers to air on TV. Its really just too bad for the viewers becuase they are misinformed about issues that are important.

  4. Yes they are using these tactics to make money, but the consumers are the ones that are buying into it. If the people do not want the tactics that the news stations are using then they should not watch the news. Once the ratings go down then the news stations will put together something that is actually useful for people to watch.

  5. Was this the first time you learned that news on TV is not reliable? I sincerely hope that you do not get your news from television. The Daily Show may be informative and funny; however, you should already be aware of what is going on in the world before you watch it. The absurdity of network news is well known already.
